چکیده

An iterative, rotated coordinates inversion technique is applied in conjunction with spatial narrowband filters in matrix form to localize multiple acoustic sources in the shallow ocean. When the iterative, rotated coordinates inversion technique is applied to broadband horizontal line array data designed to simulate a group of moving ships, the bearing of the loudest source is quickly identified. Both passband and stop band matrix filters are constructed for an angular sector centered on the identified bearing. Data filtered with the passband filters are used in the inversion to obtain estimates of the remaining source parameters, range, depth, course angle and speed, and prominent environmental parameters. Additional inversions applied to data modified by the stop band filters yield the bearing of the next loudest source. The procedure is repeated until all detectable sources have been localized. Results of applying this strategy to several simulated cases are presented. © 2005 Acoustical Society of America. DOI: 10.1121/1.2041307

Evaluation of underwater acoustic propagation model (Ray theory) in a river using Fluvial Acoustic Tomography System

Underwater acoustics is widely used in many applications, such as oceanography, marine biology, hydrography, fishery, etc. Different models are introduced to simulate the underwater acoustic propagation in the oceans and the seas. In this study, the Ray Theory model is used to simulate the acoustic wave propagation in a shallow-freshwater river (Gono River) located in western part of Japan. The...

Broadband maximum likelihood estimation of shallow ocean parameters using shipping noise

In this paper, environmental parameter estimation for a shallow ocean is addressed by using wideband shipping noise as a source of acoustic energy. Unknown locations of the broadband acoustic sources are estimated simultaneously with the ocean depth using the approximate Conditional Maximum Likelihood Estimator (CMLE). This procedure is tested via computer simulations and applied to the experim...

Acoustic Blind Deconvolution and Source Localization in Shallow Ocean Environments

The overall long-term goal for this project is to develop engineering tools that are useful to the Navy as it operates in uncertain, partially known, or unknown ocean environments. During the last year, this project has focused on further determining the utility of a time-reversal-based technique for blind deconvolution of recorded sounds broadcast by a remote source with emphasis on determinin...

15: Shallow-Water Mud Acoustics

Goals include the development of models and methods that explain observed material and acoustic properties of different physical types of shallow-ocean mud sediments. Other goals are to assess prior data relating to the acoustic properties of mud and to provide guidance in the development and interpretation of experiments. A related goal is to construct models that will guide inversion techniqu...
